That $50 craigslist pickup I got last week... a Mac Pro and a PowerMac dual G5. The PowerMac I am selling. More interesting to me is the 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 I got.

I ordered around $100 or so of upgrades for it, including 16GB RAM, 2xIntel Xeon X5355s (went from 2x dual core X5150s to 2x quad cores), a 128GB SSD, a 500GB 7200RPM HD, and an NVIDIA 8800GT gfx card (cheapest I can find that will work on El Capitan).

Firmware updated this machine so now it is a “Mac Pro 2.1" instead of a 1.1, Super easy to do, there was a utility online. This enabled the machine to fully recognize the better processors.

Since this Mac Pro had a 32-bit EFI (but can run 64-bit OSes) the last officially supported version was OS X 10.7.5. Though there are devs out there that have created a boot.efi file that will allow newer OS X versions to run on these machines. It was a bit of a pain though to get it to run... I had to make an El Capitan USB installer, then remove my SSD and plug it into my sister’s MacBook via USB enclosure, then installed El Capitan onto the SSD through her machine... and then booted into her Mac OS and replaced the necessary files. Updated to 10.11.5 and it works perfectly!

Should be a good Final Cut Pro rig!

I’m not a fan of the new Final Cut Pro. Such a disappointment compared to its predecessor.

I fucking hate it too... which is why I have FCP7 on it like a proper person.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro like a proper contributor to society.

Yeah sometimes i use that + AfterEffects too... I like Sony Vegas a lot too, but that’s on Windows.

You’re like the opposite of David Tracy, but with computers.

Pro tip: Taking a Mac Pro to Moab isn’t a good idea.

Nice find!

I just went from an E8400 C2D to an X3363 Xeon in my Lenovo M58p last week. I haven’t pushed it much yet (just got it running well right before I left for vacation), but it seems like it will be a great upgrade. I wish I could have used an X5XXX Xeon since they are significantly cheaper, but the Q45 chipset in the Lenovo doesn’t support processors with multi-processor support.

Speaking of Mac OS, I’ve been meaning to get a hackintosh together to play around with, preferably a VM. I still need to track down an iso of a newer version, or somehow get my copy of Snow Leopard working long enough do download the latest version through the App Store.

Oh! You sounds like you know what you are talking about so I have a couple questions on the Mac Pro I just got the other week. I believe it is a 3.1, running 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon processor with 8gb 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory. Currently running 10.6.8. I have to reset the admin password so I’m going to use this method: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5381 Hopefully that will work. Can I run El Cap after that on the machine? And Would there be any issues running Adobe CS5.5/6 on it? I know nothing about the different processors and whatnot and after my mid 2010 MBP Logic board went I’m hoping this machine will work for the time being.

Thanks! There are a few VMs like Mavericks, Yosemite, and El Capitan for VMWare but they’re really not very usable

Should run El Capitan without any issues if it is 3.1 or newer

Nice. I would love a machine like that

I’m guessing the usability issues are VMWare program overhead?

I’m looking to do a direct boot vhd from within Windows 7 (not sure if it’s possible). I'm mainly interested in playing win OSX a bit (since I have never really used it), and trying the boot from vhd feature of Windows 7 (I guess that's not really a VM now, is it...)

Depending on your hardware you might have more luck with Hackintosh... google it and there are tons of guides and how tos and compatibility sections

I’ll give it a shot regardless. I’m more in it for fun than for it being useful.

Shit, I had an El Capitan and Mountain Lion images until I accidentally broke my Windows bootloader and lost everything. They were hard to get, I just realized I lost them.

But neither worked in VMware, El Capitan would have no translucency and it would lag like hell and Mountain Lion would just crash right away.
